Getting Ready for Dorm Life

It is hard to believe that John will be graduating from high school in less than 2 months.  He has made his college choice, what a great feeling to have that behind us!  With dorm life looming we've already started making lists and thinking about what the dorm room decor might look like. We've made a couple trips to his college of choice and I've been in the model dorm room twice.  Y'all let's talk about how small these rooms are, I do understand this is typical though.  John's room is 14X11. The rooms come with 2 bunk beds with the bed on top and a desk top fitted on the bottom.  Community bathrooms are down the hall.

Some students move the desk top to the upper and use for storage putting the actual bed on the bottom.  I believe they can take the desk top out altogether and just have room below.

The model dorm room is decorated by Dorm Decor, probably the best guy dorm decor I've seen so far!

There are a pair of night stands with 3 drawers, a dresser(I'd call a chest) also with 3 drawers.  Each room comes equipped with a small fridge and microwave.  The closets are about 4 feet wide with space above for storage and this space is open.

What college dorm would be complete without  a pool table or ping pong table?

On Pinterest there are loads of inspiration for girl dorm room, guys not so much!  As I look at all these rooms that are perfectly decorated I wonder how long they stay that way.  I also wonder if guys try to coordinate their decor style with the other roommate.  When we go for orientation John might meet someone he wants to room with so, I wonder do I just wait to make bedding purchases until then.  Then reality of where we live(college town)hits me   The college parents and students come into Auburn and clean the stores out!!!  With that I guess I'll head out and start dorm room shopping!

  1. How fun. My dorm room was not any bigger than Johns--nothing much has changed.
I worked with one of the buyers from Dorm Decor during the Atlanta market and learned a bit about their business. It sounds like a fun job.
You are going to have so much fun decorating his dorm room. Here are two tips to keep in mind: 1) Keep function in mind (really important in small spaces) and 2) maximize the vertical space where you can.
If you make a trip to Ikea let me know and I'll meet you!
Cheers my friend and congrats to John.

    1. Great advice Shelly! May have to take you up on meeting up at Ikea!

  2. I have two boys already in college. My advice for boy moms is concentrate your efforts on a simple bed set-one set of sheets that will rarely get washed, ask them if they want to hang anything up-mine did not and stock them with toiletries, medicine and snacks. MOST boys REALLY don't care. Now my daughter who graduates in May also-TOTALLY different story! I have my work cut out for me with sewing projects, etc. I assume this is your first headed off to college. Exciting times. I am about to be an empty-nester. I am excited and sad all at the same time.

    1. April, since your a pro I will have to totally put your advice to work! You should see the list I already have going of stuff to buy or look for! Feel free to let me in on other college mom info I might need. John is my first to leave the nest, his older brother is in college locally so he was wise and is living at home!
